What is the Fourth Trimester and why did no one tell me about it!
I still get a lump in my throat and a sinking feeling in my heart when I’m contacted by a new mother, often in tears, asking me what is wrong with her baby.
‘He won’t sleep unless he’s on my chest’
‘She cries every time I put her down or give her to my husband’
‘The only way we can get him to sleep is in the sling and we’re worried about creating bad habits.’
Then the sigh of relief I hear when I tell them this is all biologically normal behaviour for human babies.
The Fourth Trimester is rarely discussed with parents, particularly prior to the birth which is a great shame as when parents are given time to prepare and have realistic expectations the transition into parenthood is a lot less stressful.
The First Trimester is a lengthy topic so I have split this blog into six sections;
